M7723 Strawberry flounces

McCalls M7723 Pattern Review

Here’s the story of this little number (McCalls M7723). I found the exact fabric from the pattern cover in my local fabric store. Grabbed it, hurried home, checked the finished garment measurements, cut into the fabric, started sewing and realized it was way too small. I did not make a muslin and believe me when I say I learnt my lesson. I then scrambled back to the fabric store and couldn’t find the same fabric so I opted for this strawberry cotton poplin from Telio Fashion. This was my first time inserting grommets and I had the world of fun. It was way easier than I expected and I quite enjoyed using the hammer to relieve my frustrations. I also used para cord instead of the required ribbon. I don’t know, I just found that the ribbon cheapened the look.

Let’s just say circles came straight from hell. I struggled to do a narrow hem on those circle sleeves. Followed the instructions to a t and still couldn’t get it done. So I attempted a rolled hem on my serger. It did the job and I actually really liked the outcome but I need some more practice.

McCalls M7723 Pattern Review

Pattern Description:

Loose fitting tops have neck, sleeve, and length variations and back hook and eye closure. A: Two-part eyelets and ribbon, shaped hemline. B: Elasticized sleeves. C: Cuffs with buttons. D: Ruffles.

Pattern Sizing:

6-14. I made 8 and it was way too small. I had to go up to a 12 and even then I feel as though 14 would be a more comfortable fit. Especially because of the laced sleeves.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Sure did.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

Fairly easy. Only part that gave me trouble was hemming the flounces.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

Quick easy sew. Can feel claustrophobic when you’re laced up in a top that’s slightly small.

Fabric Used:

I used a Telio cotton poplin from my local fabric store.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

I laced up the sleeves with para cord instead of ribbon. Used the serger for a rolled hem on the flounces since I couldn’t for the life of me get it hemmed according to the instructions.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

I may go up to a 14 next time. Would like to try View C. Will recommend to others.

I’d say give a try. Maybe go up a size or make a muslin to be sure. I quite enjoyed hammering in the eyelets. Probably wouldn’t make View A again. Not sure how much laced flouncy tops I need in my wardrobe. But will definitely attempt a different view in the future.

Overall, I really liked the details of this top. Let me know in the comments if you guys like it and feel free to leave any tips for hemming circles.
