Who doesn’t love a free pattern right? I’ve had the Sorbetto top by Colette Patterns downloaded for actual ages now! Sometimes my eyes would pick up the name when I’m looking through my digital stash but I never focused in hard enough to really think about what the pattern had to offer. Brittany Jones announced on her Instagram that she was doing a live sew along over at the LDH Scissors page and lo and behold the pattern she chose was the Sorbetto top! Of course I immediately opened my files to get my size printed and cut out! I was not missing out on this one!
It was literally the perfect opportunity in so many ways. I need more basic tops in my wardrobe especially with the way our weather is set up right now. I already had the pattern on hand. I recently had a fail that tore me apart so a basic pattern like this was exactly what I needed. And Brittany always brings joy and positive energy!
So on to sizing. This pattern offers sizes 0-26 and the files are split up into size sets with layers so printing was an absolute breeze. I only had 14 pages to assemble which was awesooome! I printed the 0-16 file and went down one size from my suggested size because looking at the measurement chart, there was a bit more ease than I’d usually go for. I made size 10 for reference; my measurements B40.5 W33 H45. I did shorten the pattern by 3 inches as well.
Usually a free pattern comes with one design style but this one had three versions. I made version 1 – a pleated front tank. Version 2 is a pleated front tunic with side vents and version 4 is a pleated front top with short sleeves. The neckline is finished with bias binding as well as the armholes of the sleeveless versions. One major plus is that you don’t have to do the pleat if you don’t want to. There is a separate cutline to omit the pleat. That means you can get multiple styles from this one free pattern!
My fabric was a remnant from a previous project. It is a black and white polyester crepe with a polka dot design and I had a little less than a yard which is one of the reasons I decided to go sleeveless. To be honest the pleat does not show up as nicely in a print but it’s still cute! The only thing I would change is how low the armholes sit on me. The slightest glance of side boob annoys me personally so I will definitely change that next time.
Following a live sewalong was super fun but also a bit challenging. Trying to stay active in the comments while following Brittany’s instructions plus sewing – I ended up having to seam rip my front pleat.. oops! Luckily since I wasn’t doing sleeves I had time to catch up. The only thing I had to do off live was hem. Obviously the sewing wasn’t my absolute finest since I was multitasking but in the end I love my top and I am so happy I decided to participate! I styled my tank with yellow tassel earrings to add a pop of colour to the black and white polka dots. Did you sew along live with Brittany?
