DIY Tassels on Love Notions Rhapsody Blouse

Guess who is a new Love Notions Ambassador! That’s right it’s me! I still feel like this is a dream! I feel so blessed, so excited, so happy and sooo nervous! I’m already having those ‘I’m not good enough’ feelings’ if I am completely honest. But at least I have the most amazing newbie friends, Josie and Crystal! We decided that we’d get the ball rolling and do a little collab and I am not going to lie, Love Notions couldn’t have picked a better newbie team (if I do say so myself)!

We chose to make the Rhapsody, a blouse and dress pattern with nine different sleeve options.. yes you read correctly! Sleeveless, cap, short, flutter, ¾ with cuff, ¾ with flare, ¾ bishop, trumpet and long sleeve bishop.. phew that was a mouthful! The dress has an elastic waist and the blouse is super flowy. I went for the blouse with ¾ bishop sleeves and the only alterations I made were to shorten three inches – 1.5″ above the waist and 1.5″ below the waist, and I also shortened the sleeves 1 inch. As I always say… short people problems!

Other features of this gorgeous peasant style pattern include a lined yoke with a pleated back and gathered front shoulder, a delicate curved hem and a notched V shaped neckline. The neckline is finished with self made bias binding and you have the option of adding ties as well. The seams are finished with french seams so the entire pattern is super neat and clean both inside and outside!

If you know anything about me.. you know that when I get in my head and start doubting myself.. it’s time to pull out some tips and tricks to prove my worth! I always have to get fancy and go the extra mile to pick myself up.. it’s just the way I cope with self-doubt. So I thought long and hard about how I could spice up my blouse to suit my island life and I started experimenting with random things in my sewing room. I ended up creating the cutest tassels ever then I added some wooden beads and I instantly fell in love! I am getting total boho chic vibes! Of course I didn’t leave you hanging… there is a tutorial on my YouTube channel and here it is in photo form as well:

What you need

  • Embroidery Floss
  • Beads
  • Scissors
  • Card/Cardboard
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Comb

  1. Cut a piece of card the length you want your tassel
  2. Wrap your floss around the card about 30 times
  3. Cut a piece of floss 5 inches and slip it under the wrapped floss
  4. Tie the 5 inch piece of string into a knot at the top of the wrapped floss
  5. Slip the floss off the card and cut across the looped ends
  6. Cut another 5 inch piece of floss and place it under the tassel a little way down from the top
  7. Wrap this piece of string around the tassel a few times and tie a knot to secure
  8. Trim the tassel to make the ends even
  9. Comb through the tassel to add fluff
  10. Thread the top knot through the needle and insert up through the bottom of another tassel making sure to come out at the top center

Now to attach your layered tassels to your Rhapsody Blouse or Dress:

  1. Slip your beads on to your Rhapsody ties
  2. Grab the ends of the top knots and bring them over the rhapsody ties tying them in a knot
  3. Snip off the excess floss
  4. Fold the end of the Rhapsody ties up to cover the knots and hand stitch in place. Once you slide your beads down, they should cover this area.

On to sizing.. one of the reasons I feel super proud to be a part of the Love Notions team is their size range. This particular pattern was recently updated to include the dress option and more sizes! It goes from XS-5X with both standard and full bust versions. I chose my size according to the size chart and it fits perfectly. I made size L standard bust for reference; my measurements are 40.5″, 33″, 45″. I love how flowy and breezy the blouse fits, very appropriate for my tropical climate… literally the perfect beach top!

My fabric is a tie dyed rayon with shades of purple and lilac on a white background. I used almost an entire bottle of starch to make this fabric behave especially for my bias binding. I really wanted my finished bias binding to be ¼” and it was really tricky maneuvering slippery rayon for that so I literally doused my fabric in starch. And then it was super scary washing my blouse before my shoot but luckily it all went well and now the fabric flows beautifully and I have an almost perfect neckline.

I styled my blouse with white distressed shorts and a bohemian style basket bag. I took it out for a strut along the beach and I felt super confident wearing it. I received a ton of compliments from the hubster. He said it is one of his favourite outfits! I shared a photo with my mom and these were her words “you really made that”? Best compliment ever! I am 100% sure that anyone who saw me on the beach just assumed I was wearing RTW, especially with these tassels.

All of that being said, it is safe to say this pattern is going to become a staple in my wardrobe. If you noticed throughout this post, I showed you the ties open, tied and in a bow. So versatile! I can definitely see myself experimenting to create more fun twists and for sure I will be making the dress version after seeing Josie’s and Crystal’s dresses!
