The sale is still on! Tami’s Birthday celebration is well underway with 40% off the Love Notions website excluding the new Glissando pattern. Yesterday I shared my gorgeous Willow Wrap Dress and today we are getting ready for the festive season with a fun sparkly Rockford Raglan. I don’t know about you, but holiday sewing feels really good right now! It gives me something to look forward to during a very scary time when things seem so uncertain!
If you aren’t new around here.. you may remember that crazy colourblocked fluorescent and zebra Rockford Raglan I posted for my first episode of Pinspiration Sewing over on my YouTube channel. In that video, I specifically said that I would try the asymmetrical version next.. and I kept my promise! Isn’t she beautiful in all her sparkly glory!
- 4 Body views
- Shirt length
- Tunic length
- Asymmetrical option
Last time I made view A, the more boxy version, because my inspiration was an oversized tee. But this time I went for that slimmer straighter fit of View C, with the asymmetrical hem. I wanted a top instead of a tunic so I shortened my pattern a whopping 4 inches! Don’t get me wrong.. I love the tunic length as well and I will definitely be trying one when it gets colder which unfortunately won’t happen until very close to Christmas. I particularly like the tunic to wear over leggings.. but there is absolutely no way I can get away with leggings right now. Our weather is all over the place. Flash flood yesterday and burning up today!
What I love most about the asymmetrical version is the fact that it allows for cool contrasting. There is actually a normal bodice piece under the asymmetrical overlay. I used velvet fabrics for my top. The plain black I used for the main body and sleeves is actually repurposed. I dabbled in decor once upon a lifetime, and I had an old backdrop I had created for a friend. I actually found it while packing for my move and so I put it with my sewing things with the intention of reusing the fabrics. The sparkly fabric is a cotton velour from Nature’s Fabrics. It was a prize I won for my participation in Sewmanpants. I hadn’t heard of them before then so this was a good opportunity to give them a try. The cotton velour is super soft and very easy to work with. My only negative is that it creases too easily and the creases are super obvious in between the sparkles and seem impossible to iron out. I had to try to avoid the parts where the fabric was folded because there are some pretty deep marks that may be permanent. Both fabrics are stretchy of course but are more stable than the pattern calls for. I personally prefer a stabler knit for this particular view. I just feel like the asymmetrical hem will hold its shape better.
- Full Bust option
I think it’s safe to say my Love Notions size is L standard bust. Apart from shortening, the only other change I made was to shorten the sleeves 1 inch. Again, a pretty standard adjustment for me. I made the ¾ sleeves with cuffs. I’ve made so many Love Notions patterns now, I know the alterations I need and it generally doesn’t change so big thumbs up for consistency on sizing. It means I can skip mock ups and go straight into cutting my final fabric.
This version of the pattern totally surprised me in terms of construction! I have no idea why I was nervous. I knew from when I made view A that this is a pretty easy pattern to sew up especially because of the raglan sleeves but the asymmetrical hem had me a little curious. I was over the moon when I scanned through the instructions and saw a mitered corner! That made so much more sense than trying to fold the hem normally. That being said, this was a breeze to sew and it was surely an enjoyable make!
I love how versatile the Rockford Raglan pattern is. I am obsessed with my two versions so far and they won’t be my last!
