If you’re thinking this one isn’t for you because you’re not a sports fan, guess what? Sports is to the absolute bottom of my fun things list. Matter of fact, I have some really embarrassing stories from Sports meet at school that still haunt me to this day. What I love most about the Game Day Jersey collection by Love Notions Sewing Patterns is the fact you can totally customize your tee to fit your own style. If you’re into sports, go with the colours of your favourite sports team. If you’re like me, and sports make you cringe, just do your own thing! I totally embraced the colourblocking opportunities and ended up with such a fun looking tee that I guarantee you can’t find in stores!

If you know anything about me… your girl has a slight tie dye obsession okay! I am over the moon that tie dye is trending again and I can find tie dye fabric at literally any fabric store right now. This one is double brushed poly; like I said I customized my tee completely to fit my preferences. DBP is not everyone’s first choice for a tee but I love how drapey it is and I just couldn’t resist this print. It is super soft too and makes such a comfy casual top. Can you spot the little animal print bits in the tie dye print? My two favourite prints in one… and purple is high on my fave colours list… this fabric is me in a nutshell!

I knew I wanted to play around with the colourblocking elements of this pattern, but my print is so busy, I had to choose wisely. Well talk about perfect timing, new fabric mail from LA Finch had just showed up at my doorstep. I actually bought some designer deadstock athletic knits to dabble in workout gear. So my white fabric on the yokes and sleeves is an athletic mesh fabric with tiny holes that allow breathability. Umm hello? Perfect combo! DBP is known as a warmer fabric and though it doesn’t really bother me in that way, it’s still good to know I have a more breathable fabric in the armpit area. Right now it is super hot here… I am sweating writing this! The Game Day Jersey is perfect for the warmer months because it is a looser fitting tee.

Now let’s talk dive into the pattern in more detail.

I made my usual L graded to XL hip. I shortened 1 inch at the waist for my 5’4″ frame. I also shortened my sleeves 1.5″ because I prefer a shorter sleeve and the pattern has a longer sleeve common in sports jerseys. The joys of sewing, you can really tailor anything to your preferences! I went with the overlapped V-neck and let me tell you, if you’re scared of V-necks… this is the one for you! This is not your traditional V-neck band where you have to do that awkward pivot thing. This is an open ended V-neck that you join afterwards. It was super easy to do.. nothing finnicky at all! Phew!

Two of the pattern’s best details in my opinion are those sleeve stripes and the side slits. The sleeve stripes are optional but they are what drew me to the pattern in the first place! I just love little fun details that make your garments stand out. They are basically 1/2″ strips and you can use contrast fabric if you wish, or even store bought bias binding! The world is your oyster! I used strips of my main dbp tie dye print. There are lines on the sleeve piece to guide you with the stripes. I did use the recommended location for mine. I have to say I am so proud of how neat I managed to sew my stripes. I used a crazy amount of pins and an edge stitch foot and voila!
If you’re a hippy girl like me… side slits are a God send! Especially for a clingy fabric like dbp, the side slits just give me that little bit of extra room plus they look so stylish! I feel like with all the design elements of the Game Day Jersey pattern and my fabric choices, you’d be able to tell this is some special tee that was cooked up in somebody’s sewing room. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never seen a tee like this in any store before! I love a pattern that allows me to be creative!
When I finished my tee, I hung it up proudly on my sewing room door where it would be displayed until shoot day. I don’t dare to wear my me mades before shoot day, especially anything with white in it. Hubby came home from work that day and these were his remarks… “Wow! That’s cool! I’ve never seen a tee like that before!”. Words that any sewists wants to hear! As if I wasn’t feeling ecstatic enough already! Needless to say, I’ve already taken this one for a spin once shoot day was over. It is the perfect casual tee for me and I know I will get alot of wear. It goes with anything really.. shorts or jeans! Of course it would come in handy for walks on the beach!

If you want to grab the Game Day Jersey, all 3 from the collection are on sale for $5 today only, the Ladies, the Mens’ and the Kiddos! I think a certain someone is hinting that I grab the Mens’ version after seeing mine! Can’t blame em! It is a really cool tee and this project was really enjoyable to plan and sew.
